Sea safety: how safe should I be?

Sea safety is essential however some conditions can be more dangerous than others. As a boat owner and or captain you will need to ensure you have all of the appropriate safety equipment on board. This is because you will need to protect yourself, your boat and your passengers.

State requirements

Each state and territory has different requirements when it comes to keeping a boat safe. These requirements will be different depending on the type of vessel you have, how you are using it, and where you are taking it. Educate yourself on the marine safety requirements in your state, and any other state that you will be using your boat in.

Offshore use

Boating offshore is much more dangerous than jetting about on an enclosed lake. Large waves and extreme weather can contribute to unsafe conditions, and if you do get into danger the rescue mission will be much more complex. People may not even know where you have gone.

Taking a boat several miles away from the coastline or on long seagoing journeys will require you to step up its safety equipment. EPIRBs are essential, along with marine radios, flares and smoke signals. Taking any kind of boat out to sea will require you to establish the best safety plan possible. This includes reliable equipment that is checked and or replaced regularly to ensure functionality.

Crossing the bar

Crossing a bar is another dangerous activity, so even if it is only for a short period you will need to be prepared. Rough seas around the bar area can cause accidents, so ensure that your boat is appropriately equipped.

Marine electrical equipment

In addition to fun stuff like marine televisions and entertainment systems, marine electronics includes safety equipment. We are referring to marine radios, navigation equipment and EPIRBs which all need to be correctly installed and in good repair. Hiring a marine electrician to install safety items is essential to ensure they work in an emergency. An electrician can also service your equipment, check it for superior functionality, and make any repairs that need to be completed.

Remember that your safety equipment is designed to save human lives so take it seriously. If you are just cruising in a tinny on a calm river, all you might need is a set of oars and some life jackets. But if you are heading out to see or entering rough waters, prepare your boat with the best.
